Visualizing the Future of Urban Environments

Fern Agency needed a striking, simple visualization of a complex and ambitious idea.

Indivisible Cities is a multimodal exercise in creative imagination about the future of global cities. This project unites artists, scientists, and policymakers in an interdisciplinary exchange that highlights the vitality of city life. It emphasizes the necessity of collaborative efforts across disciplines and geography to address the challenges of urban environments in an increasingly dense, networked, and warming world.

The project sought to create an interactive online experience with a central visual and functional tool—and the primary navigation principle of this project: a table of fifty-five themes. These themes collectively explore how the city of the present will transform into the city of the future, considering various challenges and means.

To visualize this vital and complex project, the design centered around a grid of squares and a palette of colors to visually represent different types of land — from lush to arid and agricultural to urban — as well as various bodies of water, weather conditions, and climate. For each of the 55 themes, a gradient was created from the color continuum, illustrating the intersection of two elements that define each theme. The clean, elegant design and thoughtful layout provide a comprehensive visual narrative for the future of urban environments.
